Residential Fire in McGregor Claims One Life; Investigation Underway

On December 8, 2024, at approximately 4:56 a.m., the Clayton County Communications Center received a report of a residential fire in the 300 block of Ash Street, located within the corporate limits of McGregor, Iowa.  Upon arrival, the Mar-Mac Police Department and the McGregor Hook and Ladder Company observed the residence fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters from the McGregor Hook and Ladder Company and the Prairie du Chien Fire Department worked diligently for approximately one hour to contain the blaze before entry into the residence was possible.  During the subsequent search, the remains of a deceased adult were discovered inside the structure.

Due to the sensitivity nature of this incident, no additional information will be released at this time.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Mar-Mac Police Department and the Iowa State Fire Marshal Division.  Responding and assisting agencies included the McGregor Hook and Ladder Company, the Prairie du Chien Fire Department, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Mar-Mac Ambulance, the City of McGregor Street Department, McGregor Municipal Utilities, the Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office, and Grau Funeral Home.
